Despite being incredibly popular during his time, Nikola Tesla today remains largely overlooked among lists of the greatest inventors and scientists of the modern era.  Thomas Edison gets all the glory for discovering the light bulb, but it was his one time assistant and life long arch nemesis, Tesla, who made the breakthrough in alternating current technology.  Edison and Tesla carried on a bitter feud for years, but it was Tesla's AC generators that illuminated the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago; the first time that an event of such magnitude had ever taken place under artificial light.  Today, all homes and electrical appliances run on Tesla's AC current.

Born in Croatia in 1856, Tesla spoke eight languages and as well as almost single handedly developing household electricity.  During his life, he patented more than 700 inventions.  He invented electrical generators, FM radio, remote control robots, spark plugs and fluorescent lights.  He had a photographic memory and did advanced calculus and physics equations in his head.

Of course, like many other eccentric geniuses, Tesla was completely insane.  He was prone to nervous breakdowns, claimed to receive weird visions in the middle of the night, spoke to pigeons, and occasionally thought he was receiving electromagnetic signals from extra terrestrials on Mars.  He was an obsessive compulsive hating round objects and anything that wasn't divisible by the number three.  Nikola Tesla was the ultimate mad scientist.

Journalist and author Nigel Cawthorne graduated in physics from University College, London, England. In the 1970s he worked on Science and Mechanics magazine in New York where Nikola Tesla had worked decades before. He has worked on scientific titles such as The Universe Explained, Tomorrow’s Technology, The History of Aviation, The History of Technology and The History of Ordnance, and periodicals including Electronics Today, Space Frontiers, Quest and Nature. He has also written biographies including Takin’ Back My Name – the Confessions of Ike Turner, The Empress of South America – The True Story of Eliza Lynch, the Irish Courtesan Who Destroyed Latin America’s Wealthiest Country and Became Its National Heroine and The Daughter of Heaven – The True Story of the Only Woman to Become Emperor of China. He lives in Bloomsbury, London, England.
