Tess herself is goodness incarnate: every fiber of her soul is pure; yet, under the stress of circumstances, the compulsion of force and the beguilement of fraud, she is harassed, degraded, despoiled, plunged into misery, goaded to the insane commission of homicide, and finally hanged for murder. Tess of the D'Urbervilles was a huge commercial success when it was published in 1891. It is now considered a masterpiece of tragic fiction and one of the most moving and memorable of Thomas Hardy's novels.
