CHAPTER 1

The Adventures and Life Lessons of Wolfy

Once upon a time, there was a cozy little log cabin nestled way back in the remote mountains of Alaska. It was the happy home of an adorable wolf pup named Wolfy. You could always tell when Wolfy was happy because he would whistle and wag his tiny, little tail everywhere he would go.

Wolfy was so very cute, but he was also surprisingly tough like his dad, Savage. Savage was a huge timber wolf that was wise, noble, and courageous. He was nicknamed Savage because of his fighting ability and the huge scar on his cheek. Savage received this scar from the claw swipe of a vicious grizzly bear that was trying to hurt a group of little wolf pups. Savage was a legend. No one messed with him. Even though he was the most feared timber wolf in the forest, he was not a bully. He only fought to protect his family and the weak that could not protect themselves. One might say Savage was a hero.

Sometimes late at night when Wolfy would hear a scary sound outside his bedroom window, he would sneak in and quietly burrow under the covers and snuggle beside his dad. When he laid his little head on his dad's muscular chest, he would feel safe and fall gently asleep. His dad loved his little Wolfy with all his heart and often told him so. Wolfy looked up to his dad and loved it when they would play and wrestle on the floor. One time they accidentally broke one of the lamps, but Mama forgave them.

Wolfy's mom was gentle and loving. Wolfy and Savage loved her very much. She could also make the most amazing cakes and cookies one could ever imagine.

Whenever Wolfy got sick, his mom would hold him lovingly and stroke his face. She would read Wolfy sweet stories until he got well again.

They were not perfect, but they loved and respected each other. They all believed deeply in God and Jesus. They attended the Wolf Mountain Country Church almost every single Sunday.

Wolfy loved to hear Pastor Love tell about how God made the great big world with just the power of His word. Wolfy often marveled at the sky, the moon, the stars, and the amazing world around him. He sensed deep in his heart that it was all just too big and wonderful to be an accident. Wolfy also loved to learn about the kind and sweet things Jesus did when He walked on the earth so long ago.

One cheerful morning in spring, Wolfy woke up to the joyful sound of a happy little bluebird that was singing outside his window. Wolfy knew it was his good friend Tweeter. Tweeter had beautiful blue feathers that glistened in the morning sunshine. His chest was snow- white, and his tiny beak was bright yellow. His eyes were blinking with joy as he chirped his morning tune. His song seemed to echo, "Get up. Get up. It's a beautiful day."

Wolfy jumped out of his bed and began to prance around the floor with excitement. He was so anxious to go out and play, but he remembered what his dad taught him to do first.

After Wolfy read his daily page from the Bible and said his tender prayer to God, he jumped up off his knees and scampered into the other bedroom to kiss his mom and dad. After making a light breakfast and a big mess for Mom to clean up, he bolted for the door. He couldn't wait to see what was in store.

Wolfy opened the front door of the cabin. It creaked as it swung open to the amazing world outside. The whole forest opened up right in front of Wolfy's eyes. He was about to burst with anticipation. He could smell the pine needles and the aroma of honeysuckle in the air. He could not believe how green the trees and the grass were. The brilliantly colored little flowers were waving as if to say, "Good morning, Wolfy." A little voice inside of Wolfy cried out in his heart, "What a glorious day this is!"

Tweeter said, "It's about time you got up, sleepyhead."

Wolfy smiled and said, "Tweeter, let's go wake Hoppy up and see if he wants to go to the meadow and race."

Hoppy was a cute little bunny, and he was a very fast runner. He was one of Wolfy's best friends in the world.

Wolfy said to Hoppy, "Bet I can beat you today! I ate my oatmeal and blueberries, and I feel like I have rocket fuel inside of me!"

Hoppy jumped off the porch and said with a crooked smile, "You are going to need rocket fuel to catch me. See ya later, Granny!"

Hoppy blasted off down the trail like his tail was on fire! Tweeter looked at Wolfy's shocked face and said, "Don't just stand there, silly. Run or he is going to beat you to the end of the meadow!"

Wolfy giggled wildly as he sped off down the trail behind Hoppy! He caught up to Hoppy, but he saw a deadly danger on the trail ahead. Hoppy was running with his head down and did not see the huge mountain diamondback rattlesnake coiled up along the edge of the meadow trail!
