Facts about our country’s national bird are explored in this title from the “Rookie Read About American Symbols” series. This small text contains colorful photographs and illustrations that enhance the brief narrative. It begins with a look at the decisions that were made in choosing the bald eagle as the symbol of courage and freedom for the new country. The fact that the birds live only in North America and that they have a strong and proud look influenced the choice. There is a photo of the eagle with labels pointing to its various parts. One chapter discusses how bald eagles were in danger of dying out completely due to chemicals and hunting until laws were passed to help save them. An illustration shows the bald eagle on the country’s Great Seal that is printed on government papers and flags. There are “Fun Facts” throughout the text. A timeline from 1880 to the present time highlights the progress. A color?coded map indicates where eagles live in the different seasons. A table of contents, glossary, and index are included. K-Gr 2—A clean, crisp design and a plain, accessible writing style characterize this series. Every feature is designed with the youngest readers in mind: books feature one short paragraph per page, printed in a large, sans serif font. For all its simplicity, the text is remarkably informative ("Lady Liberty stands 305 feet (93 meters) tall. That is as high as a 22-story building. At the time, it was the tallest statue in the world."). Throughout each volume, blue-limned sidebars feature "Fun Facts" ("The White House is the only home of a country's leader that is regularly open to the public."). The illustrations are plentiful, colorful, and captioned. An ideal series for newly independent readers.
