About the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including How Mama Brought the Spring; Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; and The Tushy Book. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved MacBook in New York City.;Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.

Sophie Silver is starting a club, but she is limiting her membership to those who are “the best.” Yoko asks to be in the club, claiming to be a terrific artist. Sophie turns her down explaining that her own artwork is better. Fatima can do three cartwheels, but Sophie can do four. Katie wants to be in the club. She wears her best clothes to school. Even though Katie looks great, Sophie turns her down, saying she has better dresses. Jojo tells Sophie that no one can be best at everything. Sophie shouts at Jojo, causing her to cry. Observing the interchange, Katie tells Sophie that she is the best—at being mean. The other girls agree and decide they do not want to be in Sophie’s club. They form their own club. Sophie is dejected, until Katie explains that it is okay to just be yourself. The illustrations include young girls from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
