The Blaming Tree
Charlies Nathaniel Riley III was until recently a typical sixteen-year-old raised Catholic who with atheist tendencies and doubts attends a conservative private Catholic school located in Atlanta Georgia. Charlie is growing up and dealing with the same pressures regarding self-purpose, social hierarchy, young love and family dynamics that most his age encounter, only another level has been added. In addition to the day-to-day burdens of high school, Charlie is further forced to deal with the survivor’s guilt that he silently suffers from after the infant death of his sister. Four years prior to attending St. Vincent De Paul Catholic School, Margaret Elizabeth Riley was killed in an accident at the age of two while under the care of her older brother. Charlie’s family life as he knows it is altered forever. In a desperate attempt for answers, he alone is blamed for her death. Due to his parents and neighbors accusations, Charlie is left to deal with the self-loathing that accompanies the guilt he feels surrounding her accident.
Ultimately Charlie questions and turns his back on himself, his religion and those around him in an effort to find answers regarding his own self worth.

“Would anybody care if I just went away?”
"Who decides who live and who dies?"
Determining that his own life is of itself without value, Charlie decides that suicide is the only way to find the peace that he has longed for.
Ultimately he is able to silence the demons that have continually haunted him through the guidance of the spirit of his deceased sister Maggie, who shows him that every life has meaning and purpose.
