About the Author

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she taught school and wrote The Boxcar Children because she had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car. Encouraged by its success, she went on to write eighteen more stories about the Alden Children.

A chapter about outdoor adventures provides information about tents, songs, fishing, hiking, and lists fifteen uses for a bandana. A diagram helps to show how to build a sofa fort. There are tips concerning traveling such as how to pack a suitcase and how to take digital photographs. Several pages list simple English words in different languages. There is a chapter on activities for Halloween and another chapter with easy recipes. “Violet’s Workbag” contains directions for various crafts, “A Friend in Need” is about helping others, and the last chapter explains a variety of games. There is a table of contents and some small illustrations. This practical guide should be interesting to readers who enjoy the Boxcar Children books.
