The Christmas Quilt
The Christmas Quilt is a short story that tells of the tender relationship between a little girl and her grandmother and a gift that becomes a symbol of love and a lasting family Christmas tradition. It was written on Christmas Eve many years ago. Deb asked me to write a story to accompany the quilts that she had made for several of our children and cousins that year. When I asked what she had in mind, she said it was about family. And in bits and pieces throughout that afternoon, she told me of her love for her beloved Nana, her joy in her family, and her deep feelings for Christmas itself. I realized she was telling me her story. So I wrote The Christmas Quilt in first person through the eyes of a little girl. I finished it that evening amid the the chaos of playing children, the sweet fragrance of baking cookies, and the music and laughter of family enjoying each other for the holidays. I went to the local 24 hour copy center that night just before midnight and made enough copies of The Christmas Quilt to give to all our children the next day and everyone in our home who might ask. I had Debbie read the story to them that morning, after all, it was her story.
Christmas quilts were part of our family Christmas traditions before I wrote the story. I knew that it was an important tradition to Deb, but I didn't know why until she revealed that part of her heart to me on that Christmas Eve afternoon when she asked me to write a story. Since that Christmas we have included reading the Christmas Quilt every year to remind us what really matters and always remember everyone we cherish. Debbie made a promise of love long ago to always remember, which is still the promise of The Christmas Quilt.
