The Drifting Cowboy
Born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault in the province of Quebec on June 6, 1892, Will James, like other young men before him, left home as a teenager to live out his dream of becoming a cowboy in the American West. A rustling incident landed him in a Nevada prison in 1915, where James turned to his artwork to convince the parole board of his worth. Freed on parole, James went on to write and illustrate 24 books and numerous magazine articles about cowboys, horses and the West. Torn between his attachment to the simple life of a cowboy and the demands of being a popular author, James turned to alcohol for solace, causing him to lose his wife, his ranch, and, in 1942, at the age of fifty, his life.

First published in 1925, the seven stories in the book revolve around the adventures of a lanky cowboy named Bill, whose drifting takes him throughout the West, from Montana to Arizona, as he lives the hard life of a working cowboy.

"He has an unvarnished but singularly salty and effective style." (New York Times)
