In 1994, the American Library Association (ALA) brought Margaret Edwards's seminal 1974 work on young adult library services back into print, an edition for which this reviewer served as editor. Now, just eight years later, they have reissued that classic work to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Edwards's birth, with a foreword and additional material by well-known YA advocate and author Betty Carter. This new edition retains the footnotes clarifying Edwards's many passing references to colleagues, literary characters, and obscure poems and books, and adds many welcome new works and online sources to the bibliography for professionals. Carter's foreword is a paean to this YA forerunner's philosophy and influence, with fresh insights from an interview with Edwards's disciple Lillian Bradshaw. Two new appendixes-an Alex Awards introduction and annotated list by Carter and a 1998 speech given by Richard Abrahamson at the inception of that award-convey the mistaken impression that Edwards used adult books with teens out of preference rather than necessity. Her career predated the invention of the genre, and all her life, she equated young adult literature with the saccharine "junior novels" of the fifties, regarding the form as a mere stepping stone to adult reading. "Fiction written especially for the teenager does not need to be judged by the standards set up for adult novels," she says in her Tool Shed section of practical instruction for YA library work, a quote that makes the final appendix by Carter on the Margaret Edwards Award for authors of YA literature seem somewhat ironic.
