The Feedsack Dress
Fall 1949 is scary but exciting for farm girl Gail Albright. When she begins junior high at the nearby town of Craigsburg, Gail has no idea of the struggles and friendships she will find.

She's the butt of jokes made by class snob Veronica Holt and Veronica's stuck-up clique. And they especially make fun of Gail for wearing a feedsack dress her mother made.

After Gail's first taste of humiliation, she must find a way to overcome her embarrassment and anger. The only thing harder than putting up with Veronica's mean teasing is finding the strength to beat her at her own games.

With a little help from her friends, Gail might just pull it off.

About the Author

Carolyn Mulford grew up on a farm near Kirksville, Missouri. She attended a one-room grade school and spent her summers working in the fields, pumping water for milk cows, and reading books that took her to other times and places. Those books made her want to be a writer.

Carolyn earned a master’s degree in journalism and left Missouri to serve two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Dessie, Ethiopia. There she taught English and helped build a school for lepers. The experience stimulated a curiosity about other cultures and led her to travel in 65 countries.

Her journalistic career began in Washington, D.C. After being the editor of Synergist, a national magazine about service-learning, she became a freelance writer and editor. She has written hundreds of articles and several books (including Adventure Vacations in Five Mid-Atlantic States, Elizabeth Dole: Public Servant, and Financial Fitness for Teens), edited a dozen newsletters, and given workshops on writing and editing.

She recently moved back to Missouri, where she edits nonfiction and writes historical novels for young readers and mysteries for adults.

Living in other countries made her aware that people everywhere share basic goals, but each individual, time, and place is unique. She wrote The Feedsack Dress to portray the universality and uniqueness of daily life in rural Missouri in the middle of the 20th century.
