Finding a Voice is a nine-volume series that introduces middle-grade readers to women's struggles for economic, social, and political equality in the U.S. Some titles focus on a specific time period; others examine a key issue as it evolved over many decades. This dual structure leads to some redundancy among the volumes, but provides a beneficial breadth of coverage. Each text hooks readers with a compelling event like Lucy Burns's and Alice Paul's 1917 jailing, beating, and hunger strike, or teen Charlotte Woodward's decision to skip her glove-making job with wages she never saw in order to attend the 1848 Seneca Falls women's rights meeting. The opening chapter of Frontier notes that she was the only attendee alive when the 19th Amendment finally passed, though at 91 she was too frail to vote on Election Day in 1920. Each text also includes a good selection of primary-source quotations, documented in the chapter notes for further research, and historical photographs, many in color, with informative and detailed captions. Though aimed at the middle grades, each volume includes further resources for both younger and older readers, making the series a suitable purchase for high school libraries as well, especially where students need introductory information. Altogether a great resource for middle school and high school libraries, this book and the others in the "Finding a Voice" series provide an excellent look into the history of women in the United States. This particular volume, focused on the feminist movement in today's society, is divided into five chapters that address the idea of "fairness" for women in the workplace and provide a short history of the movement to aid young adults in understanding why this ideal has been instrumental in providing the rationale for equal rights for women. The third chapter, "The Right Stuff," provides examples of women in the military who were able to prove that women deserved to be astronauts, pilots, naval commanders, and generals. Chapter four highlights our female Supreme Court justices, and the final chapter considers women in politics. Chapter notes, a chronology of 20th century highlights connected to this text, and a glossary of related terms aid the text. Three additional sections focus on further reading for those interested in the subject; I was especially happy to see those readings categorized by audience (younger readers, older readers).
