About the Author

Herbert Maxwell (1845–1937) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, horticulturist, and politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1880 to 1906. Maxwell wrote a number of novels, including The Letter of the Law (1890) and A Duke of Britain (1895), as well as several biographies and nonfiction works, including Scottish Land Names (1894) and The Making of Scotland (1911).
