About the Author

Stephan Schug is a medical graduate from the University of Cologne in Germany. At this University he also completed his MD by thesis in clinical pharmacology and his specialist training in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine. After working for the University of Cologne as a Clinical Lecturer and Co-Director of its Cancer Pain Management Center, he moved to Auckland, New Zealand in 1989.

In Auckland, he worked initially for Auckland Hospital as a Temporary Acting Specialist in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, before joining the Pharmacology Department of the University of Auckland as a Senior Lecturer and Head of its Section of Anaesthetics in 1991. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and became full Professor and the first Chair of Anaesthesiology of the University of Auckland in 2000. Throughout his 12 years in Auckland, Stephan Schug had a clinical role as a staff specialist in anaesthesia and pain medicine at Auckland Hospital and the inaugural director of its pain service.

When Stephan Schug moved to Perth in 2001, he maintained his linkage to the University of Auckland as an Honorary Professor of Anaesthesiology, while taking up his new role as Associate Professor, then Professor in the Pharmacology Unit of the School of Medicine and Pharmacology of the University of Western Australia. In 2006, he succeeded Professor Teik Oh, the Inaugural Chair of Anaesthesia at UWA, who retired. Stephan Schug's clinical role is Director of Pain.

In this update of “The Little Red Hen,” debut author Maier casts a dark-haired girl named Ruby as the lead and her older brothers Oscar Lee, Rodrigo, and José as the gang that declines to help her (“No way” is José’s stock reply). Undaunted, Ruby draws plans for a fort, gathers supplies, and assembles the structure without them. Then, of course, they want to use it. The scribbly lines and bright colors contributed by Sanchez (The Curious Cares of Bears) convey exuberance on every page. She pictures Ruby dreaming up her fort in the family bathroom, then consulting her father (who has a drafting board) and her mother (who wields an impressive collection of tools). Even Ruby’s grandmother gets in on the action. Maier keeps her prose spare and preserves the rhythms and taglines of the original (“ ‘Fine,’ said Ruby. ‘I’ll hammer them myself.’ And she did”). Ruby’s satisfaction is palpable, and readers won’t fail to grasp the message of self-sufficiency. Ages 4–8. Author’s agent: Karen Grencik, Red Fox Literary. Ruby has a pile of boards, a fuzzy idea, and three brothers. And like the little red hen, Ruby's on her own. Her smart-aleck brothers have time for neither their pesky sister nor her project. " ‘Who wants to help me draw the plans?' Ruby asked….‘Not me,' said Oscar Lee. ‘I don't think so,' said Rodrigo. ‘No way,' said José. ‘I'm too busy.' " With the help of her mother and grandmother, Ruby saws and hammers until the backyard fort takes pride of place in the backyard—much to the envious grumblings of the three boys. When Ruby won't let them inside, the brothers paint the fort, add a mailbox, and plant flowers in hopes of a reprieve. "Ruby was delighted." Mollified, she invites them in for a plate of cookies. Barcelonan artist Sánchez incorporates fun details such as the strings of papel picado bedecking the fort and the brothers' chalk art. Her textured illustrations and sense of humor add depth to each dynamic scene. Throughout the story, Maier's little Latina go-getter breaks gender and cultural stereotypes. She outthinks and outperforms the boys. She uses her dad's drafting table and her mom's workshop, and female relatives help build the fort. In light of this, it's too bad the boys don't propitiate Ruby with further gender-norm-defying gestures, instead joining her to eat cookies she evidently has baked. Despite a lost opportunity, a mostly empowering story for children and their parents. (Picture book. 4-8)

Description: This handbook describes an easy to use protocol to manage acute pain induced by surgery or trauma. It also covers the upgrading of pain management to suit certain categories of patients, such as drug addicts, patients with acute neuropathic pain, and the elderly. The first edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the author, is to provide updated information on acute pain management to nurses, medical students, and doctors in training. These are worthy objectives as they present simple and easy guidelines for acute pain control. The book meets the objectives, assuming that the reader gets details of anatomy, neurochemistry, and pathophysiology of acute pain from other sources.
Audience: According to the author, the book is written to help nurses, medical students, and doctors in training. In my judgment, the book will help any practicing medical professionals who deal with postoperative or post-traumatic patients. Both authors are credible authorities in the subject matter.
Features: The book covers the pharmacology and different ways of administration of different medications to control pain. It gives special attention to three important groups of patients — addicts, patients with neuropathic pain, and the elderly. What is best about the book is the simple calculation of the dosage of pain medications and the easy way to manage special groups. The advice to not talk about drug rehabilitation at the acute stage is appreciated. Unique features include nice clear boxes and appendixes.
Assessment: This is a concise simple reference on how to manage patients with postoperative or post-traumatic pain. It offers simple ways to calculate a patient's need for pain medication and how to make adaptations for certain problematic patients. Compared to other books in the field, it is shorter, clearer, and easier to follow.
