About the Author

In 1946 five-year-old Samuel Gilbert was the star of the Gilbert Gospel Preachers and Singers touring the country with the biggest names in gospel music, including Mahalia Jackson, Mr. Alex Bradford, the Roberta Martin Singers, and the five blind boys of Alabama and many others.



But just as Samuel reached the height of his fame his group disbanded and 12-year-old Samuel moved to God-forsaken Brownsville of Brooklyn, New York. It was “kill or be killed” on the streets of Brownsville. Young Samuel fights for his life and joined the Roman Lords, one of the deadliest gangs in New York City.



Samuel swiftly ascended to the rank of war counselor. Still attending church seven nights a week, Samuel earned the nickname “Preacher.” A hoodlum by day and minister at night, Samuel served God and Jesus, and for his troubles found himself abandoned by his family and broke at the age of 19.



Desperate to survive, in the year 1960 young Samuel picked up a gun and embarked on a career of armed robberies and selling drugs. Also known as the “Boy Wonder” in his ministries, Samuel became a craftsman in robberies and very knowledgeable of the Bible; he became an evangelist on the run from the law who was armed and dangerous.
