The Necromancer's Reckoning

For a decade, Angel Salvatore has been the most powerful sorcerer and only necromancer in all the Northeast. Never one to ask permission nor apologies, he has acted with near impunity for years.

The High Council of Sorcery has come to Boston, and Angel is their target. Charged with numerous violations of practitioner laws, his freedom and family are placed in jeopardy.

If found guilty, Angel's apprentice Daniel will be imprisoned to serve out the remaining years of his apprenticeship. Isaac, his brother, is too vulnerable to be left unguarded, and Angel fears for his sanity and health. And Simeon, Elder vampire and Angel's mate refuses to see Angel convicted under the laws of the Council and his actions to keep Angel free threaten to start a war that could destroy their world. And Angel faces the severest of punishments-the castration of his gifts.

Dealing with an impending trial, a wayward ghost, and a grave-robbing ring of thieves leaves Angel on the edge. He thinks he may have a handle on things until violence erupts across the city, and a stranger comes to town . . . a stranger with his own dark powers of necromancy.

Fans of Emma and Persuasion may OD on the eye candy contained in Margaret C. Sullivan's Jane Austen Cover to Cover. A fascinating survey of the visual treatments of Austen's work...this irresistible album provides an intriguing overview...”—BookPage

Children's Literature - Emily Griffin

The beautiful art in this collector’s item is perfect for Jane Austen fans. With over 200 images of covers, readers will be able to see the lasting impact Austen has had on literature. This collection starts with the first cover image, titled “Thomas Egerton First Edition,” of Sense and Sensibility. This first book had a print run of 750 copies. It was sold in 1811 as three volumes (typical of the time) for 15 shillings. Not only do these images show a journey through time, they teach us about history and different cultures. Readers will see many early editions—the first recognizable one being the “Peacock Edition” in 1894. Covers from modern times include comic and graphic novel editions, movie tie-in covers, board books, remixed editions (such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), and cover images from around the world. This would certainly be a welcome addition to any personal collection of Austen books, but it would also be a useful tool in classrooms studying Austen, publishing, or the history of popular literature. The cover images are accompanied by details about the edition and the art. Interspersed throughout the book are quotes and trivia from Austen’s novels, biographical information, and historical commentary. Also included is a table of contents, timeline, book summaries, further resources and readings, and an author’s note. Reviewer: Emily Griffin; Ages 12 up.

This attractive volume is a comprehensive overview of the many iterations of the Jane Austen oeuvre. The novelist's works have been subject to the whims of fashion in their appearance, adaptations, and even occasionally in content. Sullivan (The Jane Austen Handbook) proceeds chronologically through the lifetime of Austen's books, with sometimes amusing observations ("Oh, how charming! Mr. and Mrs. Darcy went to the Grand Canyon on their honeymoon!"). Sullivan points out anachronistic style choices and outside influences, covering everything from movie tie-ins to children's and foreign-language editions. The large format, full-color interior, and full-page pull quotes make this a browser's delight, with covers of rare editions for reference and enough information to place the content into context. From the most beautiful (perhaps a cover of Emma designed by fiber artist Jillian Tamaki) to the inexplicable (a 2006 audiobook of Sense and Sensibility features a woman in a camisole sundress), even the zombies are included. While one can find any number of items emblazoned with Austen quotes and art, this is a singular work, which includes a handy synopsis of all of Austen's works and a time line. VERDICT This survey will appeal to book collectors, designers, and the legions of Janeites, minor and major.
