About the Author

Al Rundio, PhD, DNP, RN, APRN, NEA-BC, DPNAP, is an experienced clinician, administrator, and educator. He is Assistant Dean, Clinical Professor of Nursing, and Department Chair for the Doctor of Nursing Program at Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions. Formerly Vice President of Nursing at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, New Jersey, Rundio is co-author of Nurse Executive Review and Resource Manual, published by American Nurses Credentialing Center. Rundio has held various faculty positions at Drexel University, Rutgers University, and the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He has taught across the curriculum in BSN programs and graduate nursing programs. He currently holds the following positions:

Description: This easy-to-follow guide outlines the basic budget system, types of reimbursement, expenditures, and variances.
Purpose: The purpose is to acquaint and assist nurse managers with budgeting, capital expenditures, reporting, and understanding concepts of healthcare finance.
Audience: Although written for nurse managers, the book could also be used by those interested in healthcare finance.
Features: The book covers the basic topics in budgeting, what a budget is, what is included in operating expenses, how this is tied to various reimbursement methods, and what is important about the ideas of QSEN, governing boards, and high-reliability organizations. The best things about the book are the various examples and figures, which describe sample spreadsheets and budget formulations, and a variety of case studies. In addition, each chapter includes notes and a summary.
Assessment: The book is easy to read and well written, and it is an excellent compilation of information on budgeting. The examples and case studies are current and easy to follow. The topics are not too detailed, but offer good examples of what new managers will see and need to prepare for the task of budgeting. This is a difficult area for many managers and the authors break it down into a very manageable task.
