About the Author

Thomas Paine was essential to the success of the American Revolution. He wrote Common Sense which helped the undecided people to take the side of open revolution. When things were going bad and people wanted to quit Thomas Paine wrote The Crisis which encouraged the people by focusing their attention on the ideals they were fighting and sacrificing for. John Adams said of Paine, "Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain."

Thomas Paine was also a Deist, that is he believed in God based on the application of his reason on the designs and laws in Nature. To Deists, the designs point us to our Designer. He wrote a powerful book on God, Deism and religion, The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition in which he calls for a revolution in religion based on our God-given reason and Deism.
