Overview

This is the first collection of “Piedmont Naturalist” columns written by Bill Hilton Jr. His 38 essays originally appeared in Sunday editions of The Herald (Rock Hill, South Carolina) between April and December 1986. Hilton’s columns have been warmly received by readers, many of whom send copies to friends in other parts of the country. The author’s love for natural history is eloquently and elegantly expressed in his tales of happenings at Hilton Pond and other locales in the Piedmont—that fascinating area between the mountains and the Coastal Plain. About the Author

BILL HILTON JR. is a well-known science educator and natural history writer. He resides with wife Susan and sons Billy III & Garry at Hilton Pond in York SC, where he lives the life of the “Piedmont Naturalist.” He holds an A.B. in Philosophy (Newberry College), an M.A.T. in Biology (Winthrop College), and an M.S. in Ecology & Behavioral Biology (University of Minnesota), and is writing a thesis based on a 4-year study of Blue Jay behavior. Hilton served as science chairman at Fort Mill (SC) High School in the 1970’s and more recently at Northwestern High (Rock Hill SC) where he teaches Introductory and Advanced Placement Biology. He has 17 years of teaching experience, 13 in public schools and four at the college level. Twice named South Carolina Science Teacher of the Year (1976 and 1984), he also received the state’s Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (1984). Hilton has done extensive field research and writes about biology and biology education for professional journals; he recently received a State Department of Education grant for a booklet to help teachers demonstrate biology concepts through bird banding. He is a sought-after lecturer and gives many informative and entertaining presentations each year for educators, professional scientists, colleges, garden clubs, nature societies, and other groups. Hilton also leads natural history field trips around the country. He is an educational consultant, an accomplished photographer, an avid bicyclist, and has banded nearly 10,000 birds at his home. Hilton welcomes inquiries about natural history, biology teaching, scientific research, and his lecture, field trip, and consulting services.
