The American Revolution was a very close affair and one that could easily have had a far different outcome. At the outset of the conflict, the Colonial Rebels fielded an army that was primarily made up of relatively untried or completely green militiamen. While a strong Continental Army was developed over time, the forces General Washington commanded at the start of the war were far inferior to the Redcoats who they faced. Conversely, the British Army, augmented by approximately thirty thousand German mercenaries, was a highly professional force. Supported by the weight of the British Navy, the strongest maritime force of the era, the forces of King George III seemed incapable of being defeated by what they viewed as rag-tag rebels. Despite this apparent wide gap of talent and resources, the Colonials did end defeating a force that they should not have been able to outlast. How was such a result achieved? The author of this well written historical work addresses this central question in this introductory history of the American Revolution. Using a chronological approach, Danielle Smith-Llera starts with Lexington and Concord and finishes with the peace treaty that allowed the United States to come into existence.
