Mr. Romeo D. Ty was born in the Philippines in the small town of Quirino outside Manila. He is the son of a beloved Cantonese father and a loving Spanish-Filipino mother who was also an artist. At age eleven, Romeo unknowingly began walking his path toward architecture through the sketching of buildings. While he was in intermediate school, he continued his passion for sketching as a hobby and decided to study arts and music after high school. His experiences traveling overseas gave him the inspiration and the conviction to pursue a career in architecture later in his twenties. After graduating from a small design school in Wisconsin in 1985, he moved to California to pursue a career in design.
Encouraged by his mentor in school, Romeo began his career as a draftsman, as one must understand the skeleton of a building in order to be an efficient designer. As he continued to pursue his dream of excelling in the field of design, Romeo was fortunate enough to work for some of the finest firms in Southern California, such as Danielian Associates, William Hezmalhalch Architects, Bassenian Lagoni Architects, and JZMK Partners, where his contributions helped earn multiple design awards, such as the prestigious Gold Nugget Award and Best American Living Award.
Romeo's global experience in architectural design began in America and expanded from the West Coast to the East Coast and throughout the Midwest. Midway through his career, his design attributes expanded to Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific rim. In the late 1990s, Romeo was fortunate enough to be involved in design projects in Asia, where he learned the virtues of feng shui in modern designs and how significant this is to the Asian people.
Today he realizes how beneficial understanding this ancient value is to the Chinese tradition and how crucial its integration is to modern lifestyle designs that continue to preserve their traditional values.
In 2008, Romeo joined JWDA in Shanghai as a senior design director. Today marks his twenty-eighth year in the business. And as this book stands as a testament to his motivation, and as a lifetime student of this noble profession, Romeo continues his devotion to design excellence.
