Rules govern the lives of the Shadowhunters, and anyone who believes in joining their ranks must subscribe to them. This book, a supplement to “The Mortal Instruments” series, is the introduction to what awaits all who are brave enough to subscribe to such rules and the consequences of them. A Shadowhunter is one who swears an oath after being chosen by an angel to keep the world away from demons and other evil ones. This book is a collection of true stories of both good and evil creatures that joined in the battle for “this noble work.” This is the twenty-seventh edition of the Codex, whose laws new shadowhunters must agree to follow. Since the thirteenth century, the Codex is described as the best friend of young Shadowhunters. It also claims to be the text that is the difference between life and earth as the record of the Ways and Laws of the Nephilim, those chosen by the Angel Raziel. There are eight chapters on different topics such as Demonologie, Monologie, Bestiarie, Geographie, as well as two appendices discussing Nephilim and the Accords. Sub-topics are highlighted throughout the chapters along with unusual designed lettering, tables of symbols, and drawings of monsters, animals, and exotic looking creatures, like warlocks and others, that create a feeling of other-worldliness. All are in black-and-white, adding to an appearance of supernatural graphic art. There are sections containing a glossary, discussion questions, and things to try.
