The Thing with Feathers

Emilie Day believes in playing it safe. She's homeschooled, her best friend is her seizure dog, and she's probably the only girl on the Outer Banks of North Carolina who can't swim. Then Emilie's mom enrolls her in public school, and Emilie goes from studying at home in her pajamas to walking through halls full of strangers. To make matters worse, Emilie is paired with starting point guard Chatham York for a major research project on Emily Dickinson. She should be ecstatic when Chatham shows interest, but she has a problem: she hasn't told anyone about her epilepsy. Emilie lives in fear that her recently adjusted meds will fail and that she'll seize at school. Eventually, the worst happens, and she must decide whether to withdraw to safety or to follow a dead-poet's advice and dwell in possibility.

About the Author

McCall Hoyle has a degree in English from Columbia College and a master’s degree from Georgia State University. She is a high-school English teacher, and her own less-than-perfect teenage experiences and those of the girls she teaches inspire many of the struggles within her young-adult novels. Spending time each day reading and writing, she lives in Northern Georgia in a cottage in the woods with her family and their odd assortment of pets.

Nora Hunter is a graduate of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television. She currently resides in Los Angeles, where she is able to combine her two loves of reading and performing. Some of her favorite audiobook credits include The Prince Warriors series, Finding Ruby Starling, and the Earphone Award winner One for the Murphys.
