About the Author

JANE WERNER (1927-2002) edited the first 12 Little Golden Books that launched in 1942, one of which was The Poky Little Puppy, the bestselling picture book of all time. She went on to write and edit scores of Golden Books, including the bestselling My Little Golden Book About God.

SHEILAH BECKETT (born 1913) has illustrated dozens of children's books in her long career. Entirely self-taught, she was the first woman to work at the prestigious Charles E. Cooper advertising art studio, where she illustrated advertisements, album covers, and Christmas cards. But illustrating fairy tales has always been her first love, and is what she's best known for.

The familiar tale of the dancing princesses is presented in the traditional “Golden Book” format with a simplified retelling and complementary illustrations. A poor soldier stops at an inn on his way home and hears about a mystery involving the king and his lovely daughters. Each night, the king locks the girls in their bedroom, but each morning he finds their dancing slippers worn quite through. The soldier accepts the challenge of finding the secret—even though failure to accomplish this mission results in death. Fortunately, he is kind to an old woman he meets along the way, and she rewards him with good advice and a cloak of invisibility. The soldier is thus able to follow the girls and solve the mystery. He chooses the eldest daughter as his bride, becomes heir to the throne, and gains untold riches. Beckett’s softly colored illustrations add interest and will help young readers understand the story.
