Overview

The Widow's Tale is one of the first stories written by Jane Austen, and first appeared more than 100 years later as Love and Freindship(sic). Generally considered a juvenile story it was actually written by Jane Austen during her teenage years and is dated as being completed on June 13, 1790.

The Widow's Tale is a parody of the romance novels of Miss Austen's day--a slyly humorous tale filled with outrageous coincidences and youthful follies, somewhat reluctantly related via a series of letters from the older-yet no wiser--widowed, Laura, to the daughter of her oldest friend. It is a charmingly ridiculous tale, and delivers great insight into the emerging wit and brilliant of a very young Jane Austen.

This version includes an introduction by Teresa Thomas Bohannon author of the Regency Romance novel A Very Merry Chase, and is fully illustrated with 27 charmingly authentic, period drawings.

About the Author

Jane Austen is one of the most celebrated woman authors in history. Writing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, she brilliantly portrayed the world of the landed gentry and British upper class with a blend of wit and satire that remains immensely popular even today.

Teresa Thomas Bohannon is the author of the Regency romance novel, A Very Merry Chase. She holds an M.A.in history, with a special concentration in women's studies. Teresa formerly served as a gemstone show host for an independent shopping channel and was known as the Queen of the Gemstone Dungeon. For the past fourteen years, she has been employed as the HR Director for a large non-profit agency. She has two grown sons.

The illustrations for this edition are not original to any of Miss Austen's works; they are, however, adapted from a variety of public domain sources and authentic to the period in which Miss Austen lived and wrote. Had Miss Austen's Juvenilia been released when she first penned it, and had it been illustrated, the finished version might have appeared very much like this edition.
