Eleven-year-old Abigail Jane Stewart records the experiences in her diary as she and her family are caught up in the American Revolutionary War. This fictional diary captures the innocent view of a girl forced to survive in a war after George Washington's troops encamp in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The hardships of the harsh winter and results of being caught up in this conflict are vividly described. The diary format is age appropriate and gives an excellent view of the American Revolutionary War. The date divisions for the year 1777 provide an easy transition through the text. The "Historical Note" provides the background information about the American Revolution. Black and white sketches and photographs show the era. The "Acknowledgements" section defines the in-depth research done by the author. The diary would be an excellent supplement to the history curriculum as young readers see this period of history come alive.
