Overview

The Woman's Bible is a two-part book, published in 1895 and 1898 to challenge the traditional position of religious orthodoxy that woman should be subservient to man. By producing the book, Stanton wished to promote a radical liberating theology, one that stressed self-development. The Woman's Bible attracted a great deal of controversy and antagonism at its introduction.

About the Author

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) was a leading light of the women's rights movement in the late nineteenth century. Besides The Woman's Bible she also helped to compile the History of Woman Suffrage. With Lucretia Mott she organized the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, NY, and with Susan B. Anthony founded the National Woman Suffrage Movement.
