Two Quaker sisters, Hannah and Sally, love to fantasize about being elegant ladies. They are always envisioning themselves in frilly dresses carrying lacy parasols. When the girls are sent home from school because of a huge snow storm, their imaginary games continue. Their father has more serious matters on his mind. He is worried about slaves he is helping escape to the North through the underground railroad. A pleasant reading experience is nicely peppered with references to others in need. Their father asks them to gather all of their outgrown clothes while presenting them with a beautifully carved sleigh. De Angeli keeps with the spirit of the times in the historical fiction text and pays special attention to the authenticity of the language. The illustrations are varying from black-and-white drawings to colorful city streets. This is an excellent example of everyday heroes that can be used to discuss antiracism.
