Lucille Colandro has written many books for children including the bestselling There Was An Old Lady series illustrated by Jared Lee.

Jared Lee has illustrated more than 100 books for young readers. He has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, the Martha Kinney Cooper Ohioana Library Association, the National Cartoonists Society, and others. He lives in Ohio with his wife and a menagerie of dogs, cats, ponies, ducks, and a few unknown creatures.

Colandro and Lee have collaborated on no fewer than a dozen books featuring this voracious elderly woman, and in this outing she starts off by gulping down a live turkey: “I don’t know why she swallowed the turkey,” Colandro writes, “but she’s always been quirky.” (Truer words.) Lee captures the mounting chaos in scraggly illustrations that show the woman swallowing a football, boat, horn of plenty, and more—the perfect assortment, it turns out, to create an impromptu parade, once everything has been disgorged, of course. The rhymes are far from smooth, but the events are so preposterous that readers in the midst of laugh attacks are unlikely to care. Ages 4–6. (Aug.)

In yet another rendition of the classic song “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,” Colandro and Lee are at it again, now just in time for Thanksgiving. As predictable as every other title in the series, though not particularly noteworthy, this one misses the mark with an uneven rhyme scheme and some lines that lack rhyme altogether. The attraction of this tired series certainly lies in its predictability, but even the few lines that land rhythmically still fall a little flat. Even the most enthusiastic supporters of this series are likely to be disappointed. Those seeking predictable, rhyming titles to use for read alouds will thank themselves to skip this one, opting for more sophisticated (and just plain better) titles such as Abby Levine’s This is the Turkey (Albert Whitman & Company, 2006) and Julie Markes’s Thanks for Thanksgiving (HarperCollins, 2004). If the desire for a new take on an old classic just cannot be denied, Alison Jackson’s I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie (Dutton Books for Young Readers, 1997) is a far better option.
