Editorial Reviews

VOYA, June 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 2) - Susan Hampe

The final book in The Slayer Chronicles finds Joss facing higher stakes and greater danger than ever before. His hometown of Santa Carla is under attack by vampires, and he does not have the aid of his team. To make matters worse, his cousin Henry will be staying the summer with his family, making Joss’s life and duties as a slayer even more difficult. The reappearance of familiar faces will further muddle his allegiances, creating even more doubt that he must overcome. Though Joss’s problems and struggles are supernatural, they parallel those of typical teens, making him a relatable character; and Henry’s ever-shifting mood and opinion are an all-too-accurate depiction of teens. With Joss’s available resources at an all-time low, he often finds himself in a moral quagmire of breaking the rules versus fulfilling his slayer duties. As the final book, numerous story lines are resolved throughout this title; some are rather awkward, though ultimately satisfying. Fans of the series will be anxious for this final chapter in Joss’s story and the shocking revelations within its pages. Reviewer: Susan Hampe; Ages 12 to 18.

Voya Reviews, April 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 1) - Jane Murphy

The third volume in Brewer’s Slayer Chronicles continues the angst-ridden misadventures of teenager Joss McMillan, featured in this spin-off of the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series. Now in California, Joss must continue his mission as a vampire slayer, but he struggles with his past failures and cannot quite get it right. He copes with typical teen issues: girlfriends present and past, a family legacy, and the pressure of conflicting roles. His long-lost sister, Cecile, who succumbed to vampires, returns to him, and he must make an unbearable choice with a surprising result. His extended family and cousin Henry provide a familial backdrop. Characters from earlier in both series return to remind Joss of his struggles to succeed. The conclusion sets up another possibility in the series, creating a cliff-hanger for another adventure on the horizon. Middle schoolers and young high school readers will devour this bloodthirsty continuation of Brewer’s vampire saga. Readers will be satisfied enough to eagerly anticipate another volume in this quick-paced, contemporary series. This title is recommended for medium-sized libraries with expanding series collections. Many young readers will be reserving this title. Reviewer: Jane Murphy; Ages 12 to 18.

Gr 8 Up—Family time is not always fun, especially if you're Joss. His cousin Henry is mad at him for attempting to kill his best friend, a vampire. Joss's parents have been unreachable ever since his sister, Cecile, was killed. To compound his problems, Joss is given the mission of tracking down a murderous vampire in his hometown without any other Slayer help; his Slayer friend Paty is not allowed to help him. Joss and Henry's parents insist that the boys work out their bad blood, and now his cousin won't let him go anywhere alone. Narrator Alexander Cendese is a fine match for this story. He does a great job of narrating the mix Joss's inner turmoil as well as the action scenes and many plot twists. His unique narrative style brings to life the personalities of the characters and the Slayer world. His tone and pacing match the mix of scenes effortlessly and engage the reader. Fans of the Vladimir Todd and "The Slayer Chronicles" series will not be disappointed.—Jessica Moody, Olympus Jr. High, Holladay, UT
