Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD

Offbeat narrator Pseudonymous Bosch continues his strange story of mysterious societies chasing after a Secret so big that no one—including possibly Bosch himself—seems to knows what it is. Of course that doesn't prevent the characters from wanting to discover it—like twelve-year-old Cassandra who travels five hundred years back in time as an invisible ghost (thanks to special Time-Travel chocolate) to seek out the Jester, the legendary founder of her secret Terces Society, who may know about the Secret. Meanwhile in the present, Cassandra's body has fallen into a coma, leaving her best friend Max-Ernest desperate to find a way to awaken her, even if that means using a mind-reading monocle from his friend Benjamin Blake, who may just be an agent of the evil Midnight Sun organization. It's all very convoluted and bizarre (especially to anyone who's never read the previous books in Bosch's "Secret" series), yet after a while it's apparent that the book's appeal isn't just in its plot but in the completely nonsensical way Bosch tells his story—which is why the audio book version of This Isn't What it Looks Like is so fun to listen to. Actor Joshua Swanson perfectly embodies Bosch's irreverent attitude as he frequently pauses to advertise his earlier books, give readers emergency drills, and even relate an (apparently) unrelated story of how he developed his morbid fear of mayonnaise. Swanson is supported by a talented group of voice actors who all seem to be having the time of their lives as they portray a memorable cast of goofy psychologists, retired magicians, wise fortune tellers, and school secretaries who may all be more than what they seem. Kids who like the entertaining pedantic style of Lemony Snicket will love it. Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD

Gr 4–6—As in the previous three books in the series, Pseudonymous Bosch delivers a witty mystery adventure (Little, Brown, 2010) that is sure to keep listeners smiling. In this installment, Cass wakes up in an unfamiliar place, unsure of how she got there or who she is. To top it all off, she learns that she is invisible. Eventually she discovers that she has somehow traveled back to the Middle Ages. Luckily her bipolar jester ancestor is there, and together they begin to unravel the mystery of why she ended up stuck in the past and how she is going to get back to the present. Meanwhile Cass's best friend Max-Ernest is sitting at her bedside at home trying to entice her out of a coma caused by Time Travel Chocolate. Listeners tag along with Max as he visits unusual circus clowns, tries to learn how to read minds, and decodes secret messages in order to figure out how to bring Cass back to the here-and-now. During "Listener Advisories," the narrator speaks directly to the audience telling them to never leave this audiobook lying in the open or to disguise the audio device with a cover. The full-cast narration is a treat. This funny, stand-alone jaunt will be a welcome addition to library collections.—Caitlyn Walsh, Fayetteville Public Library, AR
