About the Author

Dr Jonathan Wilkinson qualified from the University of Liverpool Medical School in 1999. He completed further training in General Medicine and Accident and Emergency Medicine, and attained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002. He went on to train in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in Nottingham, and attained Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. During 2006-2007, he was Thoracic Anaesthesia Fellow at the Nottingham University Hospitals. He is currently Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Northampton General Hospital.

Stephen H. Pennefather MRCP FRCA is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. He qualified from Cape Town University and trained in general medicine and anaesthesia in South Africa and the UK. He has wide research interests in cardiothoracic anaesthesia.

Robert A. McCahon MBChB, FRCA is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Queen's Medical Centre. He qualified from Manchester University and trained in Wales, Australia, and finally Nottingham. His clinical commitments include anaesthesia for trauma, maxillo-facial surgery, and spinal surgery. He has research interests in cardio-respiratory modelling in ARDS and medical education.

Description: This is a pocket-sized reference covering the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative anesthesia care of patients undergoing noncardiac thoracic operations.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a brief overview of the salient surgical and anesthetic considerations regarding a wide range of contemporary thoracic operations. The authors do a particularly good job of covering the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing thoracic operations and cover the intraoperative anesthetic issues that the various operations present very well.
Audience: The book presents the basic information that will orient trainees to a planned thoracic operation. It also could serve as a quick review for anesthesiologists who provide anesthesia for thoracic cases only on an occasional basis and need to review the major anesthetic concerns for a specific case.
Features: The book is excellent in its coverage of preoperative work-ups for the various thoracic operations. The brief descriptions of the operations themselves and the associated anesthetic concerns are also very good. On the other hand, the opening chapters on surgical anatomy are severely compromised by the near total absence of illustrations, and the chapters on premedication are less relevant to a U.S. readership as many of the drugs are not available or are used differently in the U.S.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent sourcebook for trainees learning about thoracic anesthesia. The bullet-point descriptions are succinct and clear and cover the major issues that each operation presents.
