About the Author

William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879) was a prominent American abolitionist, publisher, and activist. Born in Massachusetts, Garrison joined the nascent abolitionist movement in 1830, and was briefly a proponent of resettling freed slaves in Africa. After colonization had fallen out of favor with most American abolitionists, Garrison struck out on his own, founding the anti-slavery newspaper THE LIBERATOR in 1831 and co-founded the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833, which grew into the largest anti-slavery organization in the United States. In addition to abolition, Garrison was an early supporter of the Women's Rights movement in the United States.
