About the Author

Paul Galdone was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1907 and emigrated to the United States in 1928. After finishing his studies at the Art Student League and the New York School of Industrial Design, Mr. Galdone worked in the art department of a major publishing house. There he was introduced to the process of bookmaking, an activity that was soon to become his lifelong career. Before his death in 1986, Mr. Galdone illustrated almost three hundred books, many of which he himself wrote or retold. He is fondly remembered for his contemporary style, bright earthy humor, and action-filled illustrations, which will continue to delight for generations to come.

This audiocassette and book will be well-received by early primary grade students, and will become a favorite of teachers and librarians. The little mittens dripping on the line are lost to the three kittens in this classic rhyming story. However, Galdone's humorous illustrations convey the Mama Cat's dismay at the kittens' loss of these mittens. The kittens find their mittens only to get them dirty as they eat the pie. The kittens redeem themselves by washing the mittens. One may wish for a more definite ending as all the felines smell a rat; however, that discovery must be for another author, such as Jerry Pinkney in his recent version. Galdone sticks to the original rhyme but adds humor which preschoolers in particular can enjoy. Whimsical details in each two-page spread add to the story: the bottle on a shelf is labeled "CATSUP" and mice appear on the plates, on a clock or a lampshade. The kittens could be preschool age as they do not appear very small. The book is a nice size for reading aloud and the text inside is big enough for those just learning to read.
