Through a Keeper's Eye
I use my unique perspective as a zookeeper, my style of photography, and my style of writing to express to the general public the importance that zoological institutions hold in conservation and preserving the beauty of the creatures that exist around the world. When people visit a zoo, sometimes they only spend a minute or so at an exhibit then move on. In those instances, it is easy to miss the importance these creatures have and the importance of zoological facilities for future generations. I try to offer many the opportunity to see the amazing creatures I do every day through my eyes from the vantage points of the guests that visit these very same zoological facilities.

About the Author

Raised in the growing town of Jackson, New Jersey, the author found there was always wildlife around—whether it was box turtles, frogs, or songbirds. Growing up, he loved all types of animals. From an age when other kids were watching cartoons and sitcoms, he spent Saturday mornings mesmerized by nature documentaries. Then along came a person who engulfed himself in nature to share an unwavering passion for wildlife. That man was Steve Irwin. During an interview, he stated “if we can touch people about wildlife, then they’ll want to save it.” Steve Irwin’s words and passion for animals touched Michael’s life, giving him the confidence to pursue the dream of becoming a zookeeper.
He started out by hanging around a local vet clinic sweeping up fur. At the age of eighteen, his journey was just beginning when he was hired for an internship with the sea lions and dolphins at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson.
Over the last nine years, he has turned a childhood dream into a reality. He has spent countless hours hosing dens, raking droppings, and lifting hay bales year-round in every type of weather. He has had close calls, witnessed nature’s miracles, and mourned the lives of animals who passed on. Photography became a hobby that allowed home to preserve those timeless moments he encounters daily.
