Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer

The CATegorical cats are on a mission to describe compound words for readers. They explain that a compound word is made up of two or more smaller words. The introduction includes illustrations of common terms including sweatpants, cowboy, horsemanship, upstairs, and worldwide. Following these and other examples, the readers are told that long words need not be scary, especially when they can be broken down into easily recognizable parts. Examples of compound words composed of nouns (sunshine, ballpark, shoelaces), adjectives (overworked, handwritten, underground), and verbs (daydream, jaywalk, understand) are presented. In the summary, readers are told that if they will break compound words into smaller ones, they will be outstanding. The text in verse is sing-songy and the rhymes are a bit of a stretch at times, but young children probably will not notice as they enjoy the antics of the colorful cats engaged in human activities. They will also gain a basic concept of compound words. Part of the "Words are Categorical" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
