Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs

In 1845, gold was discovered on the land owned by the Nez Perce Indian Tribe. Once the word got out, settlers wanted the treaty boundaries to be changes so that the tribes would not be able to get any of the gold. This biography explains the Indians' response and how history was made. This book is well-written. The illustrations are beautiful, and the information is both interesting and heartbreaking. The author includes a mini-biography of Chief Joseph, a glossary, a list of Internet sites, and a list of books on the same subject. To be quite honest, I must admit I never heard of this Native American chief until reading this book; after reading it, I want to learn more about him. The author does an excellent job of covering both a difficult subject and historical period in a short book. The reader is drawn in from the first page, and the ending is quite satisfying. Her words are well-chosen to stir readers' emotions. This book is perfect for the reluctant reader, and the illustrations add much to the biography. This book is perfect for any library.
