About the Author

Dr Roger Freeman FRCP(C) is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia and Senior Neuropsychiatrist at the Neuropsychiatry Clinic, BC Children’s Hospital Vancouver, Canada. He is co-founder of the Neuropsychiatry Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital and co-founder and manager of the Tourette Syndrome International Database Consortium, a world-wide clinical dataset on Tourette syndrome. Dr Freeman is the author of numerous papers on Tourette syndrome and is a frequent presenter at Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada (TSFC) conferences. He has been honoured as a Clinician of the year (2006) by the TSFC and was given a distinguished service award by the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.

Description: This interesting new book focuses on the author's diagnostic and treatment approach to patients with tics and Tourette syndrome (TS). Written and edited by an expert, this is a helpful guide for clinicians who diagnose and treat patients afflicted with this, at times, disabling set of problems.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the author's vast experience in TS and to give his perspective on the clinical and practical issues involved in caring for patients with tic disorders. He has produced a very useful book for practitioners.
Audience: The intended audience is "those working in neurodisability, child development, and neuropsychiatry as well as other health professionals who may encounter tic disorders and Tourette syndrome that complicate the treatment of their patients."
Features: The first chapter introduces the author's approach and is followed by the diagnosis and definition of terms. The third chapter focuses on the clinical presentation, while subsequent chapters discuss the prevalence, epidemiology, and etiology, as well as the clinical course and prognosis, phenomenology, and social consequences. Other topics the book covers include functional tics, comorbidity, stereotypies, tics in other medical conditions, neuropsychological issues, treatments, working with schools and families, peer relations, controversies, refractory cases, and support groups. Each chapter ends with citations of the relevant scientific literature. The seven appendixes contain very useful supplements such as web resources, publication listings, stereotypy severity scale, and practice parameters, among others.
Assessment: This is an excellent guide to the clinical management issues involved in treating individuals with TS. For clinicians treating patients with this disorder, this book will be a great resource. I highly recommend it.
