About the Author

The career path of Nel Yomtov has taken him from the halls of Marvel Comics, as an editor, writer, and colorist, to the world of toy development. He then became editorial and art director at a children’s nonfiction book publisher, and now Nel is a writer and editor of books, websites, and comics for children. A harmonica-honking blues enthusiast, Nel lives in New York with his wife, Nancy. They have a son, Jess.
San Francisco-based artist Mark Simmons is a 2009 graduate of the Academy of Art University. His specialties include comics, storyboards, sequential art, and giant robots. Nickolas Flux is not your typical teen who daydreams of being lifted off into the dark wonders of space on a challenger explorer. He has a special gift. The slightest touch of an ordinary object will warp Nickolas into some of the most dangerous moments in history. After he taps an ice cube in science class, he travels back in time to April 14, 1912, aboard the Titanic. Soon he discovers that he has only four hours left before the ship hits the iceberg and plummets to the freezing depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Nickolas will do nearly anything to prevent the crash from occurring again. He must also accomplish the impossible; he must survive this historical disaster and not become a part of history’s inevitable knack to repeat itself. While maintaining the importance of educating readers about the historical event, the author accomplishes many goals. The dialogue helps the reader to visualize conversations with language specific to the characters of that time period. While perfect for an elementary class library, this text would also be ideal for low-level English Language Learners (ELLs). This graphic novel includes elements found in typical nonfiction texts, but it also has a story plot and narration similar to fictional texts, making it very engaging and attracting developing readers at the high school level. ELLs can use the glossary to build Tier 3 vocabulary used in the narration and dialogue. Readers can develop their research skills by exploring the provided resources and websites with an inquiry-based approach to learning. Libraries and classrooms will want to have other “Nickolas Flux History Chronicles” in their collections so students can develop an awareness of various “need to know” historical events, such as the Underground Railroad, Battle of the Alamo, Pearl Harbor, and more.
