Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles

There is a tendency when introducing young children to books, to concentrate on fiction stories in picture books and early readers. Yet, young children are also interested in the world around them and there is a real need for very simple nonfiction books. This offering fits the bill. Part of the "Blastoff Readers" series from Bellwether Media, young readers will learn what toads eat, how they grow, how they stay safe from predators, and much more. As a level 1 reader, it is written for children just learning to read by themselves. The entire text is presented in a little over 100 words with a maximum of two sentences per page. The majority of the words in the text are only one syllable with no word longer than three syllables used. There are no contractions or compound sentences and the typeface is quite large. The book is visually appealing as well. Each spread consists of one or two sentences of text accompanied by a full-color photograph on the facing page. Across the top of each two page spread is a curved swath of bright yellow highlighted with an orange border. Within the yellow swath are shaded circles of yellow giving it a bubbly appearance. Page numbers at the bottom of the pages are yellow surrounded by an orange circle. Back matter includes a glossary, information about where to learn more, both in print and on the web, and a comprehensive index; all presented on yellow pages with orange accents. It all adds up to an appealing package which will be a welcome addition to library and early elementary classroom shelves. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
