About the Author

Ivan Turgenev (1818–1883) ranks as one of the greatest Russian novelists of the nineteenth century. He was born in a provincial town south of Moscow, but spent most of his adult life outside of Russia. In April 1852, he was arrested for violating a censor’s edict. Turgenev’s most famous works include Fathers and Sons (1862) and A Sportsman’s Sketches (1852).
