Freya Jaffke, an experienced kindergarten teacher, guides the reader through the various stages of "play" and the toys that are appropriate for each age. The author expresses the importance of surrounding children with toys that can help to develop a child's creativity, imagination, and developmental skills. This book is not suited for young children due to the much required adult supervision for making the toys. It is geared more towards parents and those in the educational field. The book offers detailed instructions for a wide array of toys for each stage. The toys begin with the creation of a simple knotted animal, or a felt ball. As the book progresses, the toys become more complex, including a doll house, puppets, boats or a play store. Although the book offers great alternatives to store bought toys, some prior skills are necessary for accurate completion of the toys. Many of the dolls and animals are carved from wood; some items are knitted or sewn. The toys featured in this book require some difficult to find materials, as well. For those up to the challenge and who already possess a crafty nature, Freya Jaffke offers great toy ideas to assist in the development of play in children at all ages. Reviewer: Lisette Baez
