Description: This is a compilation of 200 interactive thoracic imaging cases, organized by difficulty (easy, moderately difficult, and most difficult). Each case is presented over two pages and contains high-quality images, questions and answers, pearls, and references.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive chest imaging board review for radiologists and radiology residents of all levels. Although there are many thoracic imaging case review books, repetition and overlap is welcomed by those preparing for board examinations.
Audience: This is an excellent resource for junior residents who are new to thoracic imaging, senior residents who are preparing for the ACR Core examination, and fellows or radiologists preparing for certification or recertification examinations. The authors are experts in the field of cardiothoracic imaging.
Features: The organization of the 200 cases into three separate levels of difficulty is appropriate for how challenging the cases in each section are. The format is simple and effective. The first page has high-resolution images and five questions. The second page has the images with annotations and answers to the questions. This is followed by pearls in a highlighted box and a list of suggested readings for the topic. One of the shortcomings, inherent in many of these case review books, is that it is hard to ignore other images on the same page. This often results in unwanted revelation of findings on the CT which are very subtle on the initial radiograph.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent case review book on thoracic imaging. It shares many similarities with Thoracic Imaging: Case Review Series, 2nd edition, Boiselle et al. (Elsevier, 2011), in terms of format and content. Compared to the RadCases series (Thoracic Imaging, Restrepo and Zangan (Thieme, 2011), this book is more engaging because it has five questions for each case, rather than just a "what is the diagnosis and what are the top three differential diagnoses for the case?" approach. The bottom line is that this is a valuable part of learning thoracic imaging and should be a part of every radiology residency library.
