About the Author

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she taught school and wrote The Boxcar Children because she had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car. Encouraged by the book's success, she went on to write eighteen more stories about the Alden children.

The house next door to the Aldens' house has been empty for a long time, so they are surprised when a family with two boys moves in. The boys do not seem to have any interests, so the Aldens talk them into building a tree house in their backyard. In the process, they find a telescope that had been missing for years and discover a hidden room in the house. Through talking to the boys' uncle and doing some research in the library, they find out the reason why the room was closed off. They are happy to discover an antique rocking horse which the uncle can use to promote his restaurant. The thirty-two page book is divided into nine chapters. The graphic format does nothing to enhance the story. The comic-book style illustrations are stilted and static, as is the dialogue in the conversation balloons. Much of the plot is explained in text boxes. The colors are dark and murky, and the characters' faces all look alike and convey little expression. This is not a very appealing choice for beginning readers. Part of "The Boxcar Children" series, this work was adapted from the novel of the same name which was first published in 1969.
