Tripping Over

'Tripping Over' is the true comic foil sequel to 'Reluctant Hero.' John grows up in post war England in the 1950s and 1960s. It tells the story of John, who grows up in the shadow of his Dad, a returned war hero. John senses he is different but not in a good way and knows he has big shoes to fill. He is not coping well. Beleaguered and confused, poor judgement and clumsiness dog his every move.
When his parents visit the annual Earl's Court Motor Show to buy a new car but return with a boat instead - turmoil follows.
Later he is almost killed on a disastrous wild horse ride on Rotten Row but is he really guilty of the police accusation of fraud? As a teenager John explores his sexuality, only to fall in love for all the wrong reasons.
John's self-deprecating reminisces are often illuminating as the reader accompanies him on his bittersweet journey of both triumph and disaster.

John's first book 'Reluctant Hero,' is about his Dad, Bill, who was a Lancaster bomber pilot in WW2. 'Tripping Over' is its comic foil sequel.
'Sex, Lies & Crazy People' best described as a true life Fawlty Towers - but without Basil, follows on from 'Tripping Over.'
They are all true stories.

About the Author

John Hickman was born March 1945 in the 'little room' upstairs at 8 Barlby Road, Kensington, London, England. According to Carole, his wife of forty-nine years, "that should make him a mature writer." Educated at private schools he was editor of his school magazine. Unable to secure a University Scholarship he joined Westminster Bank, and then became a hotelier in the family business. John joined the Pest Control industry based in the UK before migrating with his family in 1971 as 'ten pound Poms.' They became naturalised Australians in 1973. John specialised in pest control, fumigation, and timber preservation throughout S.E. Queensland and the South Pacific Islands. He and his family also farmed Javan Rusa deer in the South Burnett region of Queensland. After retirement in 2003 John started to 'smell the flowers' and realised how most of them smelled the same. Unable to play golf, he discovered a passion for writing. John’s first book 'Reluctant Hero' is about his Dad, Bill, who survived as a Lancaster bomber pilot in WW2. John's second book 'Tripping Over' depicts the humorous side of life in post war England. It provides a comic foil to his 'Reluctant Hero' reminiscent of a true life 'Diary Of A Wimpish Kid' during the 1950s and 1960s. 'Sex, Lies & Crazy People' is the follow on from 'Tripping Over'. John tells the Bittersweet true story about his family’s involvement in the Harewood Hotel, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent in England during the 1960s interspersed with self-deprecating reminisces. Best described as a true life Fawlty Towers – but without Basil. Unlike Fawlty Towers John's are all true stories. 'G'day Down-Under' is a work in progress due to be published in 2016. A light hearted exposure of migration down-under in the 1970s. Other books may follow about John's lifetime in the Pest Control Industry, how not to run a Deer farm, and after retirement his life at the pointy end of the queue in a Happy Valley over 50's resort.
