Overview

When Erin arrives for class at Oshawa Secondary, she learns that her friend Marcel has been badly beaten up. She immediately wonders whether it was a gay-bashing, or whether he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.



Marcel is in a coma, so she has no clues to help her. As far as she knows he doesn't have any enemies, but there are plenty of guys at school who don't hide their hateful feelings for gay people. When the police investigation of Marcel's attack comes up against a brick wall, Erin decides she'll have to track down the guilty parties herself. Her search takes her on a dark journey through throbbing dance clubs and back alleys in a desperate effort to discover the truth.

Gr 7-10-Erin arrives at Oshawa Secondary one morning to learn that her best friend and fellow art student, Marcel, has been severely beaten and is in a coma. Everyone assumes that he is a victim of gay bashing, but when school officials and the police seem to put the crime on the back burner, Erin makes a promise to Marcel's mother to find out who committed it. Her friend Amy and Amy's religious fundamentalist boyfriend try to discourage her from the investigation as does Jon, her dope-smoking, prejudiced boyfriend, but the teen is determined to find out who attacked her friend. Unfortunately, readers are going to figure it out long before Erin does, as it quickly becomes clear that Jon is up to no good. This slight novel has more than its share of positive messages-gay bashing is wrong; God doesn't hate gay people; and smoking and drinking too much will eventually wreck your life-but it just isn't a competently developed story, and there are too many unanswered questions. So many loose ends would lead readers to think that a sequel is on the way; in the meantime, this book will just leave them unsatisfied.-Betty S.
