"I’m evolving and growing up with my paintings. It’s the only way, when you paint with emotions and feelings. I’m trying to be true with myself.” –Miss Van.
Miss Van has gone from painting the curvy, enticing pin-ups in the streets of Toulouse, to producing the melancholic and subtle works showcased at her latest exhibition at the 18 gallery in Shanghai and the Magda Danysz gallery in Paris. Together with an insightful introduction by Magda Danysz as well as an exclusive look at many paintings that were not featured in the exhibition, the book presents an immersive and encapsulating transition into the renowned artist’s new, darker style.
“Miss Van will once again exhibit a melancholic collection of paintings. As always women are the centre of attention. By adding a generous dose of coquetry and mischief to the ingredients of her work, she manages to bring out all the glamour, sensuality and sparkle of the female characters she has created. This exhibit celebrates the femininity or should we say felinity of women in an almost erotic way. Her previous series were a mix of bright, warm colours, whereas here, she has chosen to play with black and white contrasts, with sophisticated white faces balanced delicately on dark almost shadowy bodies. The ensemble is therefore far darker, allowing Miss Van’s dolls to trouble us evermore.”
Miss Van started wall-painting at the age of 20, in 1993, initiating the feminine movement in Street Art. Since then, the artist has travelled the world painting her instantly recognizable women on the streets, as well as on canvas. She has exhibited extensively for decades worldwide in Europe, USA and Asia.

About the Author

Miss Van started wall-painting at the age of 20, in 1993, initiating the feminine movement in Street Art. She originated from Toulouse, France and has spent most of her artistic life in Barcelona, Spain.
Miss Van has travelled the world painting her instantly recognizable women on the streets, as well as on canvas. Her overtly feminine street art has been a breath of fresh air in a traditionally masculine movement of urban art and paved the way for many contemporaries. Now her infamous sultry female characters, known as her ‘Poupes’, are seen on the streets and in galleries alike all over the world. From these pouting, sulky girls emerges a certain sensuality and disconcerting eroticism that is frank and unabashed. Their thoughts are palpable and the paintings become real in both flesh and spirit. Miss Van creates her characters with an innovative spirit.
The artist takes pleasure in playing with ambiguities, her dolls are childlike women that are equally angelic and devilish. They have a rare appeal that transcends gender - an appeal that also extends to the work that she shows in galleries. Over the years, Miss Van’s characters have continued to evolve. They have become less cute and more dangerously alluring, edgier – their sexy aura made all the more complex by their increasingly ambiguous facial expressions. The more she has moved into gallery work and can work with the nuances of more fragile media than the streets allow (pencil, for one), her characters have grown even more sensitive, subtle, and delicately rendered.
She has had her work displayed in galleries all over the world, some of her most recent exhibitions took place at the Magda Danysz Gallery in Paris and the 18 Gallery in Shanghai. She has exhibited extensively for decades in Europe, USA and Asia. Miss Van’s recent artistic pursuits have taken her to Los Angeles, Miami, Spain and Brazil, which hallmarks a recent return to street art, after several years spent solely painting in the studio, charging her new works with increased depth, emotion and an elevated romantic darkness and delicacy.
