Part of a series of field guides for kids produced by the National Geographic Society, this installment invites young explorers to go outside to locate and identify 175 birds found throughout North America, with particular emphasis on the contiguous United States. Beer begins by providing tips on where to find birds, what to listen for, and what to bring along on bird-watching excursions. Beer arranges the birds by family and provides both scientific and common names for each species. Several informative paragraphs and range maps are included for each of the birds highlighted in the guide. Full color photographs and diagrams, which point to identifying characteristics, enable young birders to determine a bird species within ten seconds. Readers will engage with fun pop quizzes, bird jokes, activities to try, and “birdtastic” fun facts and brief stories about special birds, all interspersed throughout the book. A glossary, a quick identification guide, an index, and a page listing additional resources contribute to the book’s utility. Though this field guide does not provide an exhaustive list of birds in North America, it is very kid-friendly and great for beginners. The size of the book and the thick, laminated cover make it practical and durable enough to take into the field for observations.
