About the Author

Edward M. Walsh, founding president of the University of Limerick, retired in 1998 after a 28-year term. He has chaired academic, enterprise and professional bodies. Holder of five honorary doctorates and a graduate of the National University of Ireland, he has Masters and Doctorate qualifications from Iowa State University where he was an Associate of the US Atomic Energy Commission Laboratory. A chartered engineer, registered silversmith and enthusiastic yachtsman, he plays the violin and piano badly. Married with four children, he lives in County Tipperary.
