Purpose: The purpose is to educate clinicians about long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Audience: The book is written for any clinicians seeking to learn more about long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy — residents, social workers, psychologists, etc.
Features: It explores long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy with a brief overview of theoretical principles and practical applications. As pointed out in the introduction, the complexities of psychodynamic psychotherapy cannot be covered in a short book, but this one does an admirable job of hitting all of the key points, ranging from getting started in therapy to dynamic formulations to working with resistance. An instructional DVD shows actors and the author playing out the clinical vignettes to demonstrate discussion of problem areas derived from the book. Of note, this second edition has updated research material about the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Assessment: This is an excellent beginning instructional book on long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy. The chapters on working with resistance and dealing with countertransference are especially well done. The DVD is useful but not essential. I teach a second-year class of residents about psychodynamic psychotherapy and I will add this book to the class curriculum. I would highly recommend this book to any beginning psychotherapist.
